The Kingmaker is a documentary film. The film is directed and written by Lauren Greenfield , which tells the Marcos dictatorial regime, implemented in 1972 by President Ferdinand Marcos, with the entry into force of martial law, and lasted until 1981. The Philippine political affair is presented through the eyes of the Ex-First Lady Imelda Marcos , an old woman (in 2016, when the documentary was shot, she was 86) apparently innocuous, trying to literally rewrite her family's story, "self-electing" the mother of his homeland and a people that partly disavowed it. The Kingmaker is going to be release on 8 November 2019 in USA.

The nine years of Marcos' dictatorship are seen, and almost lived, initially through the words of Imelda, who, in addition to her work alongside her late husband, as First Lady, was also known for her excesses related to 'acquisition of particular material assets (shoes, paintings, precious objects). Hearing what the woman says, it seems that the Marcos policy has worked for the people in all circumstances, even when martial law was passed. The story of family history is necessary to understand the strong influence that Imelda continues to have in the Philippine political landscape, led by the current President Rodrigo Duterte, which seems to be paving the way for the Marcos to return to the scene, through the attempt to make Bongbong Marcos (son of Imelda and Ferdinand) the next vice-president (even if the intention is to reach the presidency, following in the footsteps of his father ). The direction of Lauren Greenfield, who also worked on the script, is well structured, so much so as to give an overall picture of the past and the present - and probably also of the future - not only with sequences of multiple interviews with key figures in the story (activists tortured during the dictatorship of Marcos, Filipino and American journalists, prominent political figures), but also through archival material which, sometimes, is inserted immediately after the sequences of Imelda's interviews, as a refutation of what was pronounced by the woman. The montage, which with current interviews, videos and photos from the past, progressively highlights the absurdity of Imelda's statements and beliefs, is designed and built with the intention of giving the documentary a sarcastic tone, which makes the total vision very smooth and particularly pleasant.
